Sorry, Flash, but your days are numbered. Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix have all joined forces to form an Avengers-like coalition called the Alliance for Open Media. Wired reports that this tech Illuminati is working to develop an open source video format which will allow any company to use the codec to develop their own software without paying a fee. If web developers can create their own programs for streaming high quality video content, there will be no more need for Flash. Sorry, not sorry.
As Flash loyalists cling to the denial of its impending doom, Mozella released a blog post explaining why this new format is necessary. "[T]he Web doesn’t stand still and neither do we. As resolutions and framerates increase, the need for more advanced codecs with ever-better compression ratios will only grow."The corporation behind Firefox also revealed that the unnamed codec will be released under the Apache License 2.0, an open source license that will allow it to be used virtually everywhere.
While many are celebrating this major development, two web giants were notably missing from the party: Apple and Facebook. Maybe their invitations got lost in the mail.
