The incredibly sad Google map above shows everywhere that people were shot in Chicago over the Fourth of July holiday weekend – all 45 of them. Mostly all of the victims were young, in their late teens or 20s, many of them bystanders.

Eight people died, including a young boy who was watching fireworks on his father's shoulders, NBC Chicago reports.

Even sadder than this year's tally might be that the violence doesn't even come close to last Fourth of July weekend in Chicago when 82 people were shot, 14 of them fatally, according to CBS

The holiday weekend has become a notoriously violent time in notoriously violent Chicago over the past few years. Eight people were killed, and another 30 injured in 2013, five people were killed and another 37 were injured in 2012.

According to numbers reported by Red Eye Chicago on July 1, there were 216 homicides in the city in the first half of 2015. That is already outpacing last year's number.
