Man Falls to Death After Stowing Away in a Plane for 6,000 Miles

A second stowaway survived but was hospitalized.

A man was found dead on a London roof Thursday after falling from a British Airways flight coming in from Johannesburg, South Africa. The stowaway held onto the plane's undercarriage for about 6,000 miles and endured freezing temperatures before falling to his death in the approach to London Heathrow Airport, Timereports. A second stowaway was also discovered holding onto the plane and was hospitalized.

British Airlines said in a statement, "We are working with the Metropolitan Police and the authorities in Johannesburg to establish the facts surrounding this very rare case." But stowaways aren't completely unheard of. CNNreports a 15-year-old survived a journey in the wheel well from San Jose, Calif., to Maui, Hawaii. That same year a man was found dead inside a wheel well in suburban Washington after a South African Airways flight.
