In the original film The Terminator—one of the greatest science fiction films ever made—a T-800 cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is sent from the future to kill Sarah Connor, the woman whose as-yet-unborn son John will one day lead humanity’s post-apocalyptic revolution against machines that control the Earth. The only thing that can save Sarah (and John) is Kyle Reese, a resistance fighter that John himself sends from the future to protect his mother. In the end—spoiler alert from 21 years ago—Reese prevails. Not only does he protect Sarah, but in one of Hollywood’s most epic twists ever, winds up becoming John Connor’s father.

Pretty trippy, right?

Well, it’s about to get a whole lot trippier.

In the new film Terminator Genisys, this plotline is completely reimagined. This time, when John Connor (Jason Clarke) sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect his mother (Emilia Clarke), an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including a new T-800 terminator known as “The Guardian” (Arnold Schwarzenegger), as well as dangerous new enemies. With the past turned completely on its head, Reese finds that he has only one option: To reset the future.
