Now that his dogs are safe from potential Australian execution, Johnny Depp can get back to the task at hand — reviving his recently dud-laden creative output with something a bit less Mortdecai-esque. Black Mass, detailing the storied criminal career of Whitey Bulger, has all the markings of a potentially decent Depp vehicle — guns, smoking, violence, and sinister charm.

Based on the novel of the same name, Black Mass is directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) from a script by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth. Fascinating slices of nonfiction this rife with cinematic potential aren't exactly frequent undertakings, so the general consensus is that Black Mass — also starring Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, and Sienna Miller — will at least be highly watchable.

Spoiler alert: The real Whitey Bulger is currently serving two consecutive life terms (with an additional five years) at the United States Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Florida.
