A Notre Dame University student fell to his death yesterday morning, just a day before he was due to graduate.
The university told NBC News that 21-year-old William Meckling was part of a group of students who had gotten to the top of the Joyce Athletic and Convocation Center. NBC News adds that two students rushed to a Notre Dame Security Police lieutenant for help around 3:45 a.m., leading to the discovery of Meckling's body. According to NBC News, the university said that the roof of the Joyce Center was wet from rain. No one else was injured.
In a statement, Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins called Meckling's death a "terrible tragedy": "It is a profound sadness for all of us, on this graduation weekend, to lose someone so young and brimming with promise."
NBC News notes that Meckling majored in mechanical engineering and was a member of the school's fencing team, as well.
