A Trail of Macaroni Salad Got Three Burglars Arrested

Just when you thought mac salad could be on your side, it goes and does this.

In the year 1918, a man named Nick Tahou created the garbage plate in Rochester, N.Y. The garbage plate, which is to Rochester what buffalo wings are to Buffalo, consists of a protein—a choice of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders—a hot sauce that is really a zesty meat sauce, ketchup, mustard, and a base of two sides—usually homefries and macaroni salad. It's an extremely important dish to the people of Rochester (trust me, I'm from there) and really, all of Western New York. Look at that work of art above—it's beautiful.

Usually the worst thing a garbage plate can do to you is make the hangover you got from drinking 14 Genesee Cream Ales about ten times worse. But this past weekend, three guys' likely love for garbage plates got them arrested.

Matthew Sapetko, James Marullo and Timothy Walker were arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, criminal mischief and fourth-degree grand larceny for stealing a surveillance system and a cash register from Build-A-Burger, a restaurant in Mt. Morris, N.Y., about 45 minutes outside of Rochester. But that's not all they took—the three men also lifted a "large bowl of macaroni salad," according to police, and the mac salad is what ultimately brought them down. After the investigation brought police to a hiking path in the area, they came upon "a steady trail of macaroni salad" and followed it until they found Sapetko, Marullo and Walker.

There's no word on whether the three men were planning to throw together some bomb-ass garbage plates, but knowing the region, it can't be ruled out.
