Mark Lippert, the American ambassador to South Korea was hospitalized today after he was attacked and cut with a razor in Seoul, CNN reports. The suspect was reportedly upset about joint military drills that South Korea and the U.S. started this week.
Lippert's injury wasn't life threatening. He was attacked while he was giving a speech when the suspect came up from behind, pushed him down on a table and cut his cheek.
President Barack Obama called Lippert, a longtime friend and member of the president's "inner circle" since Obama's time as a Senator, to wish him a speedy recovery, according to CNN.
The suspect is a 55-year-old man with the last name "Kim," who was previously in trouble for throwing a piece of concrete at a Japanese ambassador five years ago.
Update 3/5/15: North Korea issued a statement about the attack, saying it "reflects public opinion" and is a "righteous punishment" against the United States. It also said suspect Kim Ki-jong gave the ambassador "knife-attack shower of justice."
