"The future of the Internet" has been protected. Today the FCC passed new net neutrality rules by a count of 3-2. The votes fell upon party lines, with Chairman Tom Wheeler along with Democratic commissioners Mignon Clyburn and Jessica Rosenworcel voting in favor of the new rules, and Republican commissioners Ajit Pai and Michael O’Rielly voting against.

These new rules will prevent Internet Service Providers from giving preferential treatment to content providers. Essentially, there won't be any blocking, throttling, or fast lanes on the Internet. It also means the Internet will now be regulated similar to public utilities. But companies won't be subject to certain regulations, like price controls and forced sharing of infrastructure.

The battle isn't over, though. You can expect the ISPs to take this issue to court.
