Authorities say a deaf man on trial for murdering his girlfriend stabbed the woman 38 times before placing her body in a 55-gallon drum.

According to the New York Daily News, 26-year-old Bismark Lithgow killed 19-year-old Francis Pellerano in March 2013. Lithgow, who is also bipolar, then allegedly wrapped Pellerano's body inside of a bed sheet and placed it inside of a drum at his grandmother's Harlem apartment. The Daily News adds that the woman didn't discover Pellerano's body until Lithgow's strange behavior prompted her to take him to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital.

Lithgow, who was charged with murder, could face life in prison if convicted. However, his attorneys contend that he could actually be guilty of manslaughter because his emotional state fueled his actions.
