VH1 keeps getting further into the scripted drama game, and they’ve just ordered a backdoor pilot for the TV movie The Breaks, which is based on the best-selling book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop.

Dan Charnas—the book’s author who has also written for Complex—will serve as a co-executive producer and also helped prep the story for the script. Former director of The Wire, The Walking Dead, and Elemenary Seith Mann will write the script and also direct.

The story will follow three friends in 1990s New York who all love hip-hop and are seeking to make it in the music industry. Each one faces his or her own unique challenges in their climb to the top, including overbearing parents, stubborn DJs, and prodigal rapper-drug dealers.

The movie is slated to begin production this spring and premiere next fall. Should it do well, VH1 has the option to turn it into a series.
