James Cameron’s Avatar sequel trilogy was always going to be an ambitious project, and getting the first new movie into theaters in 2016 was going to be a very tall order considering they were are shooting all three follow-ups at once.

Indeed, it looks like everything is going to be pushed back a year, as Cameron told the AP that each film would now be released one year later than initially planned. The accelerated schedule was simply too much, it seems. “There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film,” Cameron said, and given the huge financial investment it makes sense for the director to take his time and get it right.
