As The Interview’s total box office pushes towards $50 million between VOD and theater sales, Netflix has announced that all users in the U.S. and Canada will soon be able to stream the highly controversial film:

Sony was initially expecting to lose upwards of $100 million on the film when they cancelled its release following a series of threats from North Korea. However, amid pressure from the likes of George Clooney and President Obama, the film was released in some theaters and VOD over the Christmas holiday.

The film has been rented about 5.8 million times so far, and has now made back the $40 million it sunk into its production budget. Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton said in a statement that “We always said that we would get the movie to the greatest audience possible. Achieving over $40 million in digital sales is a significant milestone.”
