Finally reason to get excited about Star Trek 3. Simon Pegg, who's played Scotty in the first two films, is reportedly co-writing the 2016 film with Doug Jung, creator of TNT's Dark Blue. And don't worry, Pegg will be coming back as Scotty for the third flick.

The self-described nerd is more than qualified to take on writing duties for the iconic franchise. His previous writing credits (of which there are many) include The World's End, Hot Fuzz, and Shaun of the Dead

This latest bit of news puts Star Trek 3 on more solid footing after a disastrous 2014. J.J. Abrams left the franchise for Star Wars, and his replacement, Roberto Orci, bailed as well. A few weeks later Fast and Furious director Justin Lin was brought on to direct and ensure Trekkies that the franchise wasn't going to hell.

That July 2016 release date is finally seeming less and less ominous.
