Edward Herrmann—who starred as Lorelai’s stern-but-fair father on Gilmore Girls as well as Macaulay Culkin’s dad in Richie Rich—has died. He was 71 years old.

In a statement, Herrmann’s talent agent Robyn Stecher wrote, “Having valiantly braved months of treatment for brain cancer, Edward Herrmann passed peacefully at 8:30 a.m. today at Sloan Kettering hospital in New York City.”

In addition to his work onscreen, Herrmann was a prolific stage actor as well. He won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play in 1976 for his work in Mrs. Warren's Profession. He earned multiple Emmy Award nominations as well, including two for his portrayal of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a pair of TV movies.

The younger crowd will remember him fondly for his work in Gilmore Girls, as well as Richie Rich and the ubiquitous Dodge “Different” ad campaign.
