In yet another of an increasingly alarming number of fraternity-hijinks-gone-awry stories, a West Virginia University freshman who was found unconscious in a frat house Wednesday night has died, and the University has suspended all Greek activities on campus.
18-year-old Nolan Michael Burch was found unconscious in the Kappa Sigma fraternity house on the Morgantown campus, and by the time police arrived was not breathing and did not have a pulse. He was rushed to a Morgantown hospital, where he remained in critical condition in the ICU until he passed away this afternoon.
In a statement, University president E. Gordon Gee said “Words cannot describe the heartache we, as a West Virginia University family, feel at the loss of one of our own — Nolan Michael Burch — who passed away today.”
The school brought an immediate halt to all Greek activities as well. Dean of Students Corey Farris said in a statement that “The action to halt fraternity and sorority activities while these matters are being reviewed is being done with the well-being and safety of our students in mind. That is—and must always be—our foremost priority.”
