For Some Reason, Fox Is Making a US Version of "Luther"

Fox is remaking "Luther," for reasons we can't explain.

Because Gracepoint, Fox's remake of the UK show Broadchurch, has been such a rip-roaring success, the network announced today that it'd be doubling down on the British Invasion strategy by remaking BBC's gritty cop drama, Luther. As with Gracepoint/BroadchurchLuther's original creator will be on board in bringing the show to the U.S. But whereas Gracepoint was able to lock down the original star of Broadchurch, David Tennant, Idris Elba will only be an executive producer for the new Luther, instead of its star.

Okay, sounds great! Cool plan, Fox!

Wait, something's not right here.

Oh yeah, that's right—Gracepoint has been a tremendous flop, both in terms of ratings and critical success (we called it "as Basic as Small-Town Murder Mysteries Get"). There's also one huge question about this move that Fox probably can't answer logically: Why? The original Luther is a solid show in which Idris Elba took the opportunity to be a leading man and crushed it, but why does there need to be an American version of that? If Fox likes Luther so much, why wouldn't they just syndicate the original series? Do they really think they can improve on the series by swapping out the accents?

And honestly, Gracepoint's already proven that this UK-to-US adaptation doesn't do numbers, so unlike AMC and The Walking Dead spin-off, Fox doesn't have any excuses for being crazy.
