Fans of the Dumb and Dumber franchise showed up to movie theaters in droves this weekend, pushing Dumb and Dumber To to the No. 1 spot at the box office with an impressive $38.1 million (and we're not talking about a briefcase full of IOUs), according to studios' Sunday morning numbers.
It's a bit surprising considering you'd be hard pressed to find a positive review of the Jim Carrey / Jeff Daniels buddy movie, and since its been 20 years since we've seen these characters onscreen (no, we are not counting that terrible prequel). The movie only cost a reported $40 million to make, so this thing is a definite hit (does this mean we'll see The Mask 2? Ace Ventura 3?).
Birdman, in contrast, was probably the best-reviewed film of the week (if not the year), and landed in tenth place for its opening weekend with $2.5 million.
Even more impressive might be the weekend take for the No. 3 film of the week, Interstellar, which hauled in $136 million worldwide in just this weekend. That means it's up to more than $320 million worldwide at this point, effectively doubling its $160 million budget.
Disney's Big Hero 6 was No. 2 with $36 million.
