Man Fakes Coma to Steal £40,000, Gets Caught When He Goes Grocery Shopping

47-year-old Wales man Alan Knight pretended to be in a coma for two years so that he and his wife could swindle their elderly neighbor for upwards of £40,000. How did Knight finally get caught? He went grocery shopping all over the country and used his family’s loyalty card.

When police became suspicious of Knight’s activity, they worked with Tesco supermarket to look at CCTV footage from the times where the Knight family’s loyalty card was used. And wouldn’t you know it? There was Alan, looking very much awake and mobile as he pushed a shopping cart around.

They also obtained CCTV footage of Knight driving his car all over the country, including taking his wife and three children on a lovely vacation on their neighbor’s dime. While Knight managed to dodge his first two court appearances by hospitalizing himself, he was finally brought before a judge today and told that he would likely be going to jail when he is sentenced next month.

The lesson here, obviously, is that there’s only one man who can properly fake a coma:
