Until May 2005, few had heard of the small town of Ponchatoula, La., which is tucked into the southeastern corner of the state. It was then, however, that local authorities uncovered a massive ring of ritualistic child molestation, animal sacrifice, and Satanic worship at a local church.
Sound familiar? That’s because Nic Pizzolatto has cited it as one of his inspirations for Season 1 of True Detective, which also takes place in Louisiana and shares many similar crimes.
Vice headed down to Ponchatoula to talk with two of the lead detectives on the case about their investigation, and how they helped their small community move past this horrific event.
