A few weeks ago, speculation surfaced that many of the current Avengers would not be making it into The Avengers 3. Now, based on comments made by Marvel studio head Kevin Feige, it appears that those rumors were indeed true.

With the contracts for several key franchise stars winding down and several new stars (Paul Rudd in Ant-Man, Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange, everybody in Guardians of the Galaxy) on the rise, it seems like we’re ripe for a changing of the guard in Avengers 3. Feige seems to agree, telling Buzzfeed yesterday:

The Avengers films, ideally, in the grand plan are always big, giant linchpins. It’s like as it was in publishing, when each of the characters would go on their own adventures and then occasionally team up for a big, 12-issue mega-event. Then they would go back into their own comics, and be changed from whatever that event was. I envision the same thing occurring after this movie, because the [Avengers] roster is altered by the finale of this film.”

Who will stay and who will go? It may be too soon to tell right now, but the trailer for The Avengers: Age of Ultron certainly hints that there will be plenty of discontent all around in the Avengers’ ranks.
