Jake Gyllenhaal looks super creepy in his new thriller Nightcrawler. He lost nearly 30 pounds to play the footage-hungry Lou Bloom. He also shadowed real-life nightcrawlers, who actually do listen to police scanners and sell footage to news stations.

"We get there and three young girls had been ejected from a [speeding] car. Our technical adviser [a nightcrawler himself] … got out of our car and filmed it. Within five minutes, he’d sold the footage for several thousand dollars to the local station. Next night, we saw [several] fatalities. This is just night-time in LA," director and writer Dan Gilroy said.

The film certainly doesn't condone this life—Bloom falls pretty deep—but Gyllenhaal said he thinks we are all nightcrawlers. "I equate it with fast food. We all know [it’s] bad for us. But people demand it … This narrative of fear and this spinning of news has a great detrimental effect," he said.

Nightcrawler hits theaters October 31.
