Last weekend saw the annual celebration of one of America’s most oppressive institutions against women: The Miss America pageant.
This weekend saw the take down of that pageant by the always entertaining, and informative, John Oliver.
Oliver reminded us of how horrible this pageant, like all beauty pageants, is because its judgment of women depends on whether or not they’re married and how perfectly petite their spray-tanned swimsuit bods look. Because as Oliver points out, a woman's intelligence can be measured by her appearance.
He then exposed the pageant that boasts a 45 million scholarship contribution to women worldwide, by doing some detective work only to discover it actually provides $500,000 in scholarships.
