If you think the unemployment rate is getting better, think again. Tech giant Microsoft is adding to that number now that CEO Satya Nadella announced plans to cut 18,000 employees, the most in the company’s history.

Nadella issued a memo to employees explaining that the cuts would come from newly acquired Nokia—12,500 employees, nearly half of those who joined Microsoft from Nokia. Nadella says, “We are moving now to start reducing the first 13,000 positions, and the vast majority of employees whose jobs will be eliminated will be notified over the next six months.”

Microsoft employs 127,104 people worldwide, thus, these cuts will be 15 percent of the company’s workforce. Also, Nadella explains that Microsoft will cease production of Android phones through Nokia.

As Nadella explains, “This is the first step to building the right organization for our ambitions is to realign our workforce.” As previously mentioned, this is Microsoft’s biggest ever job cut. In 2009, during the recession, a cut of 5,800 was made.
