It was brain over brawn at the box office, as Scarlett Johansson scored her best opening weekend ever outside the Marvel Universe.
Lucy, the thriller featuring Johansson as a drug mule who's accidentally exposed to a chemical unlocking her brain's potential and superpowers, earned $44 million at the box office to shoot to No. 1 in its opening weekend, according to Forbes.
That's a huge success for an R-rated film, and for a female-led action move. It's also on track to be Luc Besson's biggest box-office success as a director. The Fifth Element, for instance, only earned $63 million total domestically.
Hercules, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, earned $29 million to take second place for the weekend, which makes it a respectable hit and The Rock's largest opening weekend in 12 years. It also cost a reported $100 million to make, compared to Lucy's $40 million.
