Sorry, Clerks fans. It looks like you’re going to have to wait a while longer for Clerks 3.

Kevin Smith told ScreenDaily that The Weinstein Company has passed on the film. Despite huge profit margins on each of the first two movies (Clerks cost $30,000 to make and netted $3 million;Clerks 2 cost $5 million and made $24 million) and a reasonable budget for the third installment, that was not enough to get the Weinsteins to bite.

“I went in with a $6 million budget and they were like, ‘Oh no, Kevin. This is too high,’” Smith said. “Bob offered us distribution, but they weren’t going to finance it.”

With studio financing out, it does beg the question as to how Smith will get the money he needs to make this movie a reality. There’s always crowd funding, which has become a very popular way for beloved franchises (Reading Rainbow, y’all) to get the money they need and return from the brink.

Whether Smith is ready to bow down to the masses like that is anyone’s guess, but it could be his best shot at making Clerks 3 actually happen.
