While the logistics of the movie’s release may get a bit tricky, there’s no doubting this: The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby looks like an incredible movie. It features two of this generation’s most talented actors in Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy, and has the unique idea of shooting identical scenes from the two main characters’ differing perspectives.
The basic premise of the movie is that a young couple falls in love, then over time starts to lose the magic. Lots of anxiety, clashes with each other and other family members, and contemplative walks ensue.
There are actually three versions of this movie, which was written and directed by Ned Benson. The first is the version that contains both Chastain and McAvoy’s perspectives together, and runs about two hours. Benson also has made two entirely separate versions, one for each character, each of which runs about 95 minutes. The unified, “standard” version will be released on September 26, with the two individual movies following later this fall in a limited release.
