Last night the world held its collective breath (more or less) as news dropped from IGN that, apparently, Team Ico's long, long delayed adventure The Last Guardian had been finally and unceremoniously cancelled. Almost immediately there was a response from Sony through Twitter.
Loathe as Complex is to report tweets as news, an update from Sony's Scott Rohde more or less appeared to quash the would-be news immediately. "@notaxation@yosp and I laughed at this rumor over dinner. The Last Guardian has NOT been cancelled," Rohde tweeted. The IGN story has since been updated to say that the game may be cancelled, but nothing is set in stone.
First debuting at E3 in 2009 (yes, 2009), The Last Guardian was the next (and given the departure of director Fumito Ueda, likely the last) game from Sony's Team Ico, developers of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. It appeared to star a boy and his strange griffin creature, who assumedly had to work in tandem in some fashion.
Given that Sony and the rest of the industry doesn't typically comment on rumors and speculation, their willingness to jump on social media and immediately correct this alleged error would seem to speak to the game's continued existence. In any case, with Sony's press conference happening tomorrow, we'll know soon either way. But if The Last Guardian doesn't make an appearance, it's probably time to move on.
