In a departure for the series, the upcoming Assassin's Creed: Unity will not feature a playable female character in four-player cooperative and developers announced that they've cut multiplayer all together.

In a series that features strong female characters and when many games are adding more diverse characters, Ubisoft has found that equality can be technically difficult.

Creative director Alex Amancio told Polygon that the decision was made due to a lack of resources. “It's double the animations, it's double the voices, all that stuff and double the visual assets,” he said. “Especially because we have customizable assassin's. It was really a lot of extra production work.”

Due to this gamers will play co-op as different version of the lead character Arno only. In past Assassin's Creed games players at least had the option to choose a female character in multiplayer. Now multiplayer is also being cut making this the first title since Assassin's Creed 2 not to have a player versus player option. So what male only, four-player cooperative is in the game will be limited to the main campaign.
