Neil Gaiman’s American Gods is one of the great fantasy novels that Hollywood still can’t manage to get right. The book deals with the gods of old (Loki, Anansi, Odin) doing battle with modern gods of American convenience (computers, TV, stocks) in one of the great works of fiction of the last 15 years. HBO had planned to adapt the novel into a series, but during an interview with Vulture, HBO’s President of Programming, Michael Lombardo, revealed why the show is no longer moving forward:

None

Gaiman still generates big interest in Hollywood, with past successes like Coraline to his credit, as well as the forthcoming Sandman movie from Warner Bros. And with fantasy TV hitting its stride, you can expect another network to give American Gods a chance in the future. Sadly, it won’t be a network with the resources of HBO.
