SPOILER ALERT: Do not read on, unless you want a major plot twist from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ruined. You’ve been warned.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, The Amazing Spider-Man 2’sEmma Stone discussed her character Gwen Stacy and the unique circumstances surrounding her death. Chiefly, this was a scene over 40 years in the making; the comic book version of the story was released during the summer of 1973, so loyal fans knew that Stone’s days were numbered.

For those unfamiliar with the comics, however, her death was certainly a shock. Although to hear Stone tell it, maybe we shouldn’t have been so surprised: “There were photos online while we were shooting, and then in the trailers she's literally falling. Everything is there except for [the death]. You see so much.”

Stone also discussed the chemistry between her and co-star Andrew Garfield, which is often cited as one of the film’s strong suits. “I think the dynamic was different in this one,” she says, “but the natural magic that Peter and Gwen have between them, was just something we tried not to over think.”

It will be interesting to see how the dynamic of the film shifts when Stone is absent from The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and other future iterations. Her strong-willed, independent depiction of Stacy was a refreshing change from many of the typical girlfriend roles in superhero films, and will be tough to replace.
