Don't Worry Noobs, "Destiny" Multiplayer Must Be Unlocked

Upcoming multiplayer game "Destiny" won't be multiplayer from the start

Upcoming multiplayer shooter from the makers of Halo, Destiny, will have a training wheels section before players get the chance to enter the multiplayer co-op and player versus player (PvP) battles featured in recent teasers like the strike on Devils' Lair.

It's no surprise that players will have to complete some tutorials before they're thrown in the fray but the developer made the decision after having all the noobs get destroyed way to quickly when exiting the sheltered starter portions of the game for the wider player versus player areas. But it says that this starter section shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.

"We found early on that people here in the studio, when they jumped on the game – these were people who were already really familiar with the game mechanics – they would roll a new character, play through the first mission then go right into PvP, and they would just get really beaten up by the other players because they didn’t have a super ability yet and they’d only got an auto rifle from the first mission.” Says developer Tyson Green.

"And they said, ‘this is really awful, this is a terrible experience!’ And we said, ‘you’re right, we have to make sure that doesn’t really happen.’

So before players roll out into the wider game they'll have the chance to grab a few special weapons and a couple of abilities, hopefully being able to at least stand up in a fight.

Destiny drops on September 9 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 and it was recently confirmed that save games from those last-gen consoles will carry-over to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 when players upgrade.
