While it may be weird to watch him and not think you’re listening to the “King of the Rats” he portrays on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Charlie Day gave a delightful commencement address full of equal parts insight and humor this past Sunday at his alma mater, Merrimack College.

Upon mention of his honorary degree, Day said “I’m a doctor now…and I plan to begin writing my own prescriptions immediately.”

However, his message wasn’t just about the typical Charlie-related hijinks like kitten mittens, milk steak, and illiteracy. He discussed getting “in the fight” and not being afraid of failure so long as you are chasing your dream and are happy with what you’re doing.

He also discussed creating opportunities rather than waiting for one to be handed to you. And why do we know he’s right? Well, instead of getting together with friends Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney to make It’s Always Sunny in his apartment, Day almost did the ill-fated Fox show Life on a Stick. He really dodged a bullet there.

And as for how people compare his speech with those of Steve Jobs, Conan O’Brien, and others?

“I don’t give a shit.”

While there was no performance of The Nightman Cometh, it was still an excellent speaking debut from a guy who is becoming increasingly popular in the mainstream entertainment world.
