As of January 15, 2015, Suffolk County, which makes up a large portion of Long Island, will join NYC in raising the smoking age from 19 to 21

The bill, which was passed by the Suffolk County Legislature last month, also includes e-cigarettes in its new age-restrictive measures. Anyone who fails to comply with the bill could lose their license to sell tobacco, as well as face fines of up to $1,000 for each violation found within a single day (and $2,000 for a second violation).

The bill follows a similar law in New York City, which banned cigarettes for under 21-year-olds last year. Whether or not you agree with the new restrictions, New York City smoking rates have been on the decline for years—probably due to the city's harsh measures. Meanwhile, economically struggling cities and states continue to light up
