Disney is moving forward with updated versions of its previous animated classics, and the one project aggressively in development is a new take on The Jungle Book. It's already been reported that Jon Favreau has signed on to direct, and now The Hollywood Reproter has learned that Scarlett Johansson and Lupita Nyong'o are in talks to star in the film.

The movie will be a live-action/CGI hybrid, and Johansson is currently in negotiations to voice Kaa, the python. Meanwhile, Nyong'o is up for the role of Rakcha, the mother wolf who adopts Mowgli. Justin Marks wrote the script for the film, but it isn’t yet known how closely it will stick to Rudyard Kipling’s original story.

In a strange twist, Warner Bros. also has a version of The Jungle Book in development with Andy Serkis set to direct. This won’t be a box office rivalry like what we’re seeing with Captain America 3 and Man of Steel 2, but it will still be interesting to watch play out.
