After five years of being relegated to the New Jersey-adjacent Hudson, Macy's annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration is returning to the East River.
While Hoboken residents will no-doubt be bummed about the news, Queens and Brooklyn will once again have an excellent view of the festivities. The upcoming fireworks will be shot from barges south of the Brooklyn Bridge, offering the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan and BrooklynBridges as a backdrop. Mayorde Blasio had long lobbied for the fireworks to be returned to the East River, protesting the original decision to move the fireworks and creating an online petition to switch them back.
As the newly-elected Brooklynite told New York Daily News, “I’m thrilled that, after years of working with Macy’s and my colleagues to make this a reality, the fireworks will return to the East River this year! Now even more New Yorkers will get to take part in this extraordinary celebration, against the backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge, the harbor and our skyline.”
