Between a multitude of comic films, high-profile comedies, and a promising new take on Godzilla set to hit theaters this summer, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has flown quietly below the radar. But like Rise of the Planet of the Apes proved in 2011, deafening hype isn’t a reflection on quality. After Rise took critics and audiences by surprise, Dawn is a movie with a lot to live up to.
While Fox hasn’t shown off much footage from the movie yet, these new images from USA Today should prove that the apes are back. With enhanced CGI and a much more impressive production budget, these images look like director Matt Reeves nailed the film’s post-apocalyptic tone.
This chapter of the proposed trilogy sees what’s left of humanity struggling to survive after the deadly virus from the first movie. Now, not only do they have to survive the burgeoning ape population, but they also have to survive each other.
