Skype hasn’t had a good start to the new year.

The Syrian Electronic Army, a group of hackers that have targeted other big name companies, claimed responsibility for an attack on Skype’s Twitter account yesterday. They posted a collection of tweets to the Microsoft-owned company’s more than 3 million followers, some of which remained on the site for more than two hours. One tweet read, "Don't use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook), they are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments. More details soon #SEA." That tweet reportedly garnered more than 8,000 tweets before it was taken down.

Skype then tweeted out the following tweet acknowledging the breach in security.

You may have noticed our social media properties were targeted today. No user info was compromised. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

While the SEA’s Twitter account reposted the messages to their own account:

Don't use Microsoft emails(hotmail, outlook),They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments.http://t.co/1I1nZx30SV

Skype says no other information was tampered with.
