Expect At Least Two More Seasons of "Sherlock"

There is, however, no word on how long it will take for them to actually air.

Good news! Though Sherlock just began its season three run in the UK last week, it seems that there's talk of a fourth and fifth season in the works already. According to executive producer Steven Moffat, he and co-creator Mark Gatiss already have the next two seasons completely planned out.

"Rather excitingly, Mark and I, for no particular reason, we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the [Sherlock] production bus," Moffat revealed during a BAFTA event last night. "And we just started plotting out what we could do in the future...we plotted out the whole of series four and five."

He offered up no other details about their plans, but he did sing their praises: "The ideas we had that day, I thought were the best we've ever had...our plans don’t tend to be 'Let’s blow up the world or cast the most famous person in the world,'" he continued. "They tend to be 'What exciting twists and turns can we add to this?' And I think we’ve got some crackers."

Of course, it's crucial to keep in mind that it took season three—which only includes three episodes!—over a year to actually be produced and get on the air, mostly because of stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's increasingly busy schedules. With their fame still rising thanks to The Hobbit and 12 Years a Slave, it's quite possible we'll have to wait just as long again for another season if the two have other projects to complete. Not that the wait isn't worth it, it's just worth noting.

Until then, at least season three has yet to air in the US—Sherlock's newest season will premiere on January 19th on PBS.
