With Warner Brothers’ live-action Akira adaptation currently stalled in production, DreamWorks is looking to be the first studio to reignite the manga craze in America by putting a Ghost in the Shell adaptation in front of cameras in the very near future. And according to Deadline, the studio has hired Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) to helm the ambitious project.

Not much is known about the project yet, but the current plan is for Sanders to film in 3D to take advantage of the series’ unique visuals. The site is reporting that Ghost in the Shell is something that DreamWorks’ co-founder, Steven Spielberg, is very passionate about, so it's obvious that the decision to hire Sanders was not taken lightly. The movie will be based on a script by William Wheeler, who wrote The Hoax and The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Ghost in the Shell will be adapted from the manga of the same name, which first started publication in 1989. The series follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, the team leader of a futuristic Japanese counterterrorism organization named Public Security Section 9. The manga was already adapted into an anime movie in 1995, but this will be the series’ first foray into live action.
