The Bechdel Test, named after cartoonist Alison Bechdel, is used to determine whether a work of art, in this case movies, has two or more women who have a conversation about something other than a man. Vocativ applied the Bechdel Test to the top fifty blockbusters of 2013. The result: only seventeen passed but those that did had significantly higher box office returns than those that failed.

That handful includes a few no-brainers like The Heat and Catching Fire, but also a few surprises like Fast and Furious 6 and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The takeaway: write more badass, independent women, Hollywood, and the effort will pay off, literally.
