Good news for anyone who wasn't enthused by Windows 8. A new report suggests Microsoft could be gearing up for an April 2015 release of its next-generation operating system.

According to Windows follower Paul Thurrott, Microsoft's wave of "Threshold"-coded updates, including the recent release of Windows 8.1, will be followed by an official announcement of Windows 9 at at the upcoming Build 2014 developer conference this spring. There will be three major development milestones over the year before its release, but there's no word on whether the public can expect to access it.

Much of this is speculation, but it's likely that Microsoft will use Windows 9 to redress much of the weaknesses of Windows 8, which "is tanking harder than Microsoft is comfortable discussing in public," according to Thurrott.
