The British Library Just Blessed Flickr With Over 1 Million Public Domain Images

That's a lot of photos.

The British Library has generously added over a million public domain photos to Flickr and is encouraging users to “use, repurpose, and remix” the images. The photos are from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries and were obtained through a massive Microsoft digitization project.

The images include three centuries worth of “maps, geological diagrams, beautiful illustrations, comical satire, illuminated and decorative letters, colourful illustrations, landscapes, wall-paintings and so much more that even we are not aware of.”

The Library is looking to crowdsource parts of its ‘Mechanical Curator’ project, and wants help from the public with "new, inventive ways to navigate, find and display these 'unseen illustrations'." Next year, it will launch an app to facilitate users’ input about the images’ content.

Pretty cool.
