Christopher Brookmyre's sci-fi gaming novel Bedlam is getting another life as a new multi-genre first-person shooter where players will be pulled through the history of gaming.

UK developer RedBedlam has written the new game based on the novel, based on the fictional game; so meta. Taking Brookmyre's dark humor and injecting it into a genre-spanning first-person shooter that will visit a huge range of old and new game worlds from arcade platformers, real-time strategy and shooters.

The novel sees a regular Joe get sucked into a video game world where he is not the hero but just the cannon fodder. The main character tries to avoid getting stomped by the epic heroes of these games while trying to escape the evil force, Integrity, that seeks to be rid of him.

“A lot of my writing has been inspired by videogames and it has always been a big part of my life. When the guys at RedBedlam got in touch to see if I was interested in creating a game with them, I jumped at the chance and have since been consistently thrilled to see my own literary worlds visualised so accurately,” said Christopher Brookmyre. “Bedlamis a tribute to gaming in all its forms and the part it has played in all our lives – as well as being a top quality FPS adventure in itself. I look forward to seeing more of these fantastic characters and worlds fully realised and I think people are going to really enjoy what we’ve put together.”

Bedlam, the novel, is out in paperback on January 21 while Bedlam the game is set to drop on Steam in the summer of 2014.
