Eidos's favorite whipping boy is shaping up

Eidos Montreal took some serious heat at the Electronic Entertainment Expo( E3) when its demo of the upcoming Thiefremake contained a pretty ham-fisted quick time event or QTE. The studio says that following the “strong reaction” from the public and critical audience (annoying game journalists) that it’s ditching the effect.

"We're not implementing them," studio spokesperson Valérie Bourdeau wrote in a blog post. "To begin with, there were very few instances of QTEs in the game; in fact there was only one in that whole hour-long E3 demo.

"However, given the strong reactions it evoked in the press and the community, it was an easy decision to do away with them entirely. So we're not doing it. No quick time."

Thief has been playing the part of whipping boy lately taking flack over its style, missions, everything. The Thief series invented the first-person sneaker genre but in the wake of games like Dishonored, that were heavily influenced by the concepts of Thief, it’s going to a tough road for the remake.

One of the great gameplay features of Thief is the varied ways players can complete a mission; but attacking guards is still not one of them. Unlike Dishonored, if players get tired of sneaking around they can just kill all the guards and sound the alarm. Try that move in Thief and they’ll end up very dead, very fast.

Eidos Montreal is offering higher difficulty levels and a completely customizable heads up display (HUD) where players can completely disable it or any of the visual effects in the game to pacify the hardcore crowd.

“There is also the possibility to disable Focus and related abilities, as promised. This is in addition to the option to disable specific elements of the UI, like the reaction icons for NPCs. The UI list is pretty extensive, so don't worry, you will be able to get the game just the way you like it."

Thief is scheduled to drop February 2014 for PC, PlayStation 3, 4 and Xbox One and 360.
