It seemed like the Kurt Sutter penned boxing drama Southpaw was doomed to collect dust on the figurative shelf forever after DreamWorks dropped out and Eminem stepped down as the lead. But now The Weinsten Company has swooped in and gears are turning again. Antoine Fuqua is still attached to direct, and now apparently Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to replace Mr. Mathers.

To recap, Southpaw's premise follows the emotional journey of "a left-handed prizefighter who wins a title but suffers a tragedy soon after and must put his life back together to earn the respect of his young daughter." If Gyllenhaal officially signs on, production could start as early as the top of the new year.
