Pacific Rim 2 hasn't been greenlit yet, but don't worry just yet—according to director Guillermo del Toro, the film is already in the works.

"No, we are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active," Del Toro told IGN in a new interview. "The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate. To me, what was beautiful and flattering was how people saw the movie not once or twice but three, four times or more. People that love it, love it with great passion. So I would love to continue telling stories about that world."

As for why the film doesn't yet have a greenlight, Indiewire suspects it may have something to do with the first film's performance in the domestic box office: While Pacific Rim was by no means a flop, it had a budget of $200 million (before marketing), and only ended up grossing $100 million in the U.S., well below breaking even. It was only the overseas box office totals, which was about $407 million, that saved the film, and made it the 10th highest grossing film of the year worldwide. Not exactly a success, but not terrible either—and there's still DVD and Blu-ray sales to factor in. The fact that Del Toro and Beacham are already working on a sequel, however, does show promise.
