Should California lawmakers get their way, a former state highway could be named after Jackie Robinson. Yesterday, state assembly approved a motion asking Los Angeles and many of its surrounding cities to change the name Firestone Boulevard and Manchester Avenue to Route 42, a nod to Robinson's number.
Steven Bradford, Democractic Assemblyman of Gardena, commended Robinson—a Pasadena native who attended UCLA— for his "temperament, his courage [and] his fortitude." Robinson made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, breaking the color barrier in baseball.
