Atari founder Nolan Bushnell thinks that Nintendo has been left in a very difficult position following the launch of the Wii U, according to a new interview with the BBC.

Aside from flagging Wii U sales, Bushnell, speaking at a collaborative event for developers in London, said that what Nintendo is choosing to focus on just may not be really in line with where the industry is going.

“"Nintendo always had a soft spot for young people,” he said. “They sort of did the 12-and-under pretty well, and the other guys did the 12-and-over.”

The problem is that Nintendo doesn’t seem to think they need to move beyond that, Bushnell said.

Bushnell’s warning may not be far off. While 3DS sales continue to move at a steady pace, the Wii U has only moved about 160,000 units worldwide between April and June. Whether Nintendo can turn it around with first-party exclusives through the rest of the fiscal year remains to be seen.
