Breaking Bad's Saul Goodman is getting his own prequel. The CW's Vampire Diaries spin-off, The Originals, premieres this Thursday, and if that does well Supernatural will likely get the same treatment. Spin-offs, in all their executive thirst glory, are very in right now, and Modern Family just scored its fourth consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. So of course the word spin-off is being thrown around the ABC offices.

What may surprise you though, is just how bad the rumored idea sounds. Executive producers Steve Levitan and Chris Lloyd are reportedly kicking around a bunch of concepts, one of which concerns a series based around Gil Thorpe, Phil Dunphy's recurring realtor nemesis portrayed by Rob Riggle. Spin-offs, by their vary nature, tend to be useless, but a series lead by Gil has the potential to, at best, be depressingly bland. Hopefully they go back to the drawing board and come up with something we can at least pretend could be as good as Modern Family.
